Welcome to Siegen!
Find your niche! SIEGMUN is proud to invite you to the 8th annual conference, hosted in the heart of the idyllic Siegerland region of North Rhine Westphalia. Join our local and international students in a young but impactful tradition. For the first time, this conference will take place not only in the university, but will also be co-hosted by the city of Siegen. The 2017 edition of SIEGMUN embraces the uniqueness of the area with an atypical offering of three committees: UN Women, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). There will also be a diligent Press Corps covering the conference’s action. This year’s conference encourages students to test the waters of these rarely embraced committees and looks forward to four days of fruitful discourse, friends made, and above all, lessons learned. As always, the culture of SIEGMUN opens itself to both beginner students as well as the more-seasoned participants. Not only are the participants from the University of Siegen, but many stem from various the high schools in Siegerland. This promotes an excellent, comfortable learning environment, which has witnessed both university and high school students alike find success and begin fruitful Model UN careers. Every participant will have the chance to dive into these exciting organisations, from a new perspective, and find their niche! So please join us, November 15-November 18, 2017. Please note that delegates from abroad will only be recognized for participation if they have a valid visa. Unfortunately, the organisational team of SIEGMUN cannot provide any help concerning visa procedures.
A Word From Your Secretary-Generals
It is our pleasure to invite you to SIEGMUN 2017! This year’s 8th edition is all about embracing the uniqueness of SIEGMUN and the Siegerland region, calling upon you to find your niche in our 2017 edition. Our conference organisers decided to take a risk and offer three interesting and challenging global organisations: UN Women, the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. In addition, there will be the opportunity to join the hard working press corps, covering much of what takes place over the conference. The goal is for you, the participant, to not only embrace a new delegation’s position, but within the context of a new committee with topics that both challenge and encourage you. We are also proud to announce, that this year’s conference is co-hosted by the city of Siegen, which means this conference not only promotes our university, but our city as a whole.
2017 has been a strange year in the world of international politics. The response to referendums and elections in 2016 has not been further isolation, but deeper unity and working together. Nevertheless, the world remains heavily divided on issues which affect us all, and thus, the need to be uncomfortable and put one’s self in new contexts with foreign perspectives has never been greater. Our hope is not only that you embrace a new perspective, but a new context with often overlooked but important issues. Take up the challenge and join us this fall. We look forward to meeting you in our lovely city!
